C-Sections

Looks like I am having a c-section..... again!
I have tryed to decide which way to go these past few months. Many of you know that I had a C with Gracie because she was just too big, and after 17 hours of labor, 4 hours of pushing, they had no other option! After all, she was a 9lb 5ouce baby. The problem was I didnt get anything except an epedural, and it had worn off alot by the time they took me in. I felt way too much pain during the surgery! I know I dont have the highest pain tolerance, but it was more than I should have felt, and my recovery was horrible.

It gives me nightmirrors just thinking about what happened. I want to try a VBAC (vaginal birth after C-section) especially because this is the last chance I have, after this, its all C's. The only thing holding me back is that we could end up in the same situation. I could just be prone to having big babies, and have another 9 pounder, and not be able to get the baby out! So.. after pondering, and talking to lots of women who have had C's (several are on their 5th child!) I have concluded to go with statistics, and plan a c-section. It is scheduled for 3 1/2 week from now! I have to admit, it is strange although kind of exciting to think I would get up shower, and go in and have the baby all planned out!

I am wondering if some of you have faced this situation and what your thoughts are about it. Was the first C different than the second or third as far as pain and recovery go? I like to hear all different perspectives, its interesting to me. At the end of the day, I am just grateful that we do have as many options as we have in our day, its a blessing.

..... doesnt 3 1/2 weeks away sound great!!!

Wow! A planned birth does sound great. I am glad to hear that you feel good about having the second by c-section; I think that is all that matters. I have never had a c-section although both of my babies almost had to be. Congrats on 3 1/2 weeks. Good luck and I hope all goes well.

I had to have an emergency C with Quinn... so when I think about doing that again, I cringe. But I also think you're doing what's best for you and that's the most important thing. I'll probably end up doing the same thing with our second baby when the time comes. If it's any consolation, I hear the second C's recovery isn't as bad. Here's hoping!

Hi Katie,

I've never had c-sections...so I can't give an honest opinion. But I'm wishing you well, and I hope the second time around you'll pull through with no problems. Isn't it a good thought that you'll be able to be all pretty for the camera? Can't wait to see pics of baby number 2...good luck and congratulations! - Jenny

Think of it this way...explaining how you gave birth to your kids is so way easier, all we have to say is "the doctor cut you out of mommy's tummy." That just takes a whole lot of the yucky out of the whole conversation.

I have never had one, but thought I might with my 2nd because they were worried about placenta previa. But everything worked out and the placenta ended up moving on its own, but if I had a 9 lb. baby I would be all over the C! Holy cow, and you are tinny! Wow! But I can imagine your anxiety especially because you had such a bad experience the first time. Good luck.

Oh, I hope things run smoothly for you! I am scared to death of C-sections since hearing about the difficult recoveries, but I'm trying to keep my options open and expect anything. When it comes down to it, the most important thing is a healthy baby in the end :) The end is near! Can't wait to see the Lawyer boy!

by the way the only pain I felt during my csec was when they closed me up I got this really bad pain in my left arm and they gave me morphine which knocked me out...so if you want to be alert for the baby try not to take anything if you get that pain!

Oh Katie...I remembering you telling me about your delivery with Gracie...and so I fully understand why you are completely scared to death for another C-section. I also have never had one, but I will pray that this one goes a lot better for you. 3 1/2 weeks...WOW...that is so soon. Maybe you should post some cute pics of your belly for those of us that don't have the privilege of seeing you :) That's probably the LAST thing you want to do huh? good luck Katie...you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I've had 3 C-sections. The first was an emergency (Londyn was also too big) and the others were planned. I was really lucky with all 3. I had great recoveries & I was pretty much up & going. Londyn was my hardest but not too bad. It is nice to get up, get ready, go & have your baby. The only bad part of that is you feel the spinal/epidural (which the spinal is more painful going in but it's nicer later because you are only numb for a few hours) without contractions to distract you. You won't have the same problem as far as feeling the pain because they are super quick at taking the baby out. If anything, it will probably be annoying that you are numb all day. Here is what I did to make my recoveries better.

1. Walk as much as you can. Get your body moving. Take the "baby cart" with you (use it as a walker) & make some rounds around the floor. When you feel a little uncomfortable, stop & go rest.

2. Drink a lot & try not to eat heavy foods. Get your bladder & bowels going. This was my biggest problem with Briley's birth but Preston's was a lot better because I drank more.

3. Ask for pain medication all the time! Let your body heal. If you are in pain, you will stress more & not enjoy your baby. Relax.

4. Sleep as much as you can. I can not stress this enough!!! I know some women will think that I'm selfish but when I give birth, I have my babies stay in the nursery at night. They will take good care of him & you will be able to get some well needed sleep. You're body can not heal properly if you are not getting enough sleep. You will have plenty of time to be woken up by your baby so enjoy it then. Also, don't feel bad for doing it either. How can you draw from your well if it's empty?!

I hope everything goes well with your delivery. The most important thing is that the baby is healthy. Can you imagine us little people that have huge babies were pioneers?? That alone makes me not feel so bad about it. And we will have some ammo when our kids start talking back to us! Good Luck!!!

I think you have made the right choice! I had know idea about your c-section??
I had a terrible time with Logan, i was in labor for thirty hours, my body just would not dilate. They ended with a c-section, which I was so set on a natural birth and the recovery was terrible:(
Anyway, I was in the same predicament for my second of what to to do. I decided to try v-back, and went a week overdue and terrible contractions and ended in a c-section anyway...So on my third I'm so excited to just schedule it and go right in and not worry about contractions or any of that stuff:)
The second c-section was a lot EASIER though! You kind of know what to expect and you understand your body a lot more:) I'm excited for you. Like I said I think you have made the right choice!! Good luck!

Well I haven't had a 2nd or 3rd C section...yet. But my first one was the same issue as you. Wyatt was just too big 9lbs 3oz- I too went through labor and wasn't able to push him out....but yea C section recoveries are crazy huh? Allow yourself tons of time to heal and make sure you have lots of help. oh good luck Katie!
ps. do you get the staples or the stitching? I would highly recommend the disolvible stitches. My sister got an infection from the staples.

Your situation sounds similar to mine! I was in in labor for 36 hours and then ended up having a C-section. My epidural also wore off and the C-section was incredibly painful. My recovery was also horrible too. I now believe that my recovery was so horrible because I was exhausted from labor and my body had to kind of recover from both things. My mom has had 5 c-sections and she said that each one got better and better. The most important thing is having a healthy baby. There are a few things that I know you can request to make you heal faster. The first is to request that you receive a nerve block in your incision. They can do it while stitching you up. They just inject the nerves in that area with numbing stuff that lasts anywhere from 24-48 hours. This helps with the initial pain which is the worst. The second thing that you can request is that they use the sauder knife. I don't know exactly what it is, but my friend had it and said it was so much better. It makes the incision incredibly even with less scar tissue. I only know of these things because of several friends. Next time I have a baby I am going to request both of them! Good luck! Cant wait to see pics!

Katie...I would LOVE those recipes. I sat trying to memorize the different ingredients, but there was just way too much to try to remember. That was very kind of you to offer.

After 15 hours of labor and having my epidural wear off I was wishing I could have done a c section. I'm sure you will do great! We can't wait to meet the newest addition!
